Q. What does the PTO do for the school?
A. The PTO organizes a school carnival each year as well as school skates each month. The PTO provides refreshments for many events including Halloween, Christmas and Valentines day parties as well as D.A.R.E. Graduation, Field Day, Kindergarten Graduation, Young Authors Conference, and Kansas Day. PTO has 2 or 3 fundraisers per year to help us accomplish these things and more. PTO also organizes the Box Tops for Education Program which has provided our school with much needed funds!
Q. When does the PTO meet?
A. The PTO meets on the first monday of the month at 6:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria. The dates of the meetings are listed on the school calendar. PTO will also send home reminder notes of these dates. Please refer to calendar if the first Monday falls on a day that there is no school.
Q. What happens at a PTO Meeting?
A. PTO meeting begin with a sign in sheet and introduction of officers. Any old business is discussed first, followed by new business. Items are discussed and voted upon. Meetings have an open door policy and all opinions and ideas are welcome. Officers stick to the agenda and limit off topic conversations to keep the meetings as short as possible - usually under one hour.
Q. What if I can't attend the meetings?
A. There are other ways to be involved in the PTO besides attending the meetings. We can always use people to help us with some data entry. soliciting donations, cleaning and organizing carnival materials and storage, writing grants, brainstorming ideas, sorting fundraising orders or many other things! By donating your time and energy, your are helping to support our school.
Q. I've heard of room parents. What is a room parent and what is the job description?
A. Room parents are selected from a list of parents who have signed up to do the job. This job can be shared by more than one person: however, a "head room parent" is usually designated. The duties of a room parent include: organizing games/crafts for the Halloween and Valentine's Day Parties and serving the provided refreshments , organizing and staffing your class booth at the carnival, and remembering you teacher on their birthday. PTO will provide you with a list of parents who have signed up to help with either/both parties and/or the carnival booth.
Q. I've heard that room parents have a hard time getting volunteers for the carnival and end up doing the work themselves. Is this true?
A. In the past there have been a few complaints about getting volunteers. Most classes pull together and get their booth staffed. PTO will be soliciting the help of some high school volunteers this year to help us out. We are hoping that this will eliminate some of the stress of finding workers.
Q. Does the PTO purchase equipment for the school?
A. PTO has donated money to help purchase the computer cart that is utilized in many classes. PTO is currently looking into buying digital cameras and playground equipment.
Q. How Can I help?
A. Your support is very important to the success of the PTO. If you can help us in any way, that would be terrific! We would like to match people with their talents to maximize our efforts. Attendance of meetings is very helpful to keep abreast of the things going on at the school. Parental involvement and ideas fuel the PTO. By attending and voting, you make a difference.
Q. My child's grandparents would like to help out with things, can they?
A. Of course! You do not need to have a child at the school to be in the PTO - only have the desire to help our students succeed!
