I've worked in the photography industry for 12
years (two in an consumer photo-lab, ten in a professional lab) and have
made a few observations:
- Photography used to be a "product" but now it is just a "service".
- digital photography has much more
flexibility and tolerance for mistakes when the photographer is
using his equipment correctly.
- professionally shot photographs are a
luxury.
- many people won't have professional pictures
taken because of the pricing of the prints.
- with the low price of digital scanners, it
is hard to secure the copyrights of professional photographs.
- you can go almost anywhere to have prints
made from a digital image (including your printer at home).
So here's what I propose:
- Instead of selling you prints at prices
marked up to cover my time and expense, I'd rather shoot your
pictures and turn the digital images over to you (on cd, dvd or the internet).
- You own the rights to your images. You can
make as many copies as you want, wherever you want.
- I will still offer prints for those who
can't or don't wish do print them themselves.
- I provide names and numbers of people who
can provide top quality art, retouching and printing services.
- To reduce overhead and reduce my costs, I do
not maintain a full studio and will travel to you and shoot on location.
- I keep a regular job. I don't have to
worry about charging enough to live on, just enough to cover my
costs.
- I charge by the hour, like an electrician or
an auto mechanic. I don't care how many outfits you wear or people you
have. Pricing like that just complicates things.
